Pleasant Hill Shaker Village

Pleasant Hill is surrounded by rock fences.  Can you imagine how long it took to build these?

Carpenters' Shop
The Gift Shop cat!  There are three cats that live in the Carpenters' Shop that allow the people to run the gift shop and sell tickets!

Farm Deacon's Shop

Meeting House
Men entered from the left and sat on the left.  Women entered through the door on the right and were seated on the right.

Inside Meeting House.  We watched a demonstration of Shaker music, dance, and song - amazing acoustics.

Centre Family Dwelling
Two entrances, two doors, two sexes...  one doorway for men, one for women.

Scott is reading about the Shaker lifestyle in the library.

This Shaker chair is hanging from wall pegs.  It was common to hang chairs to get them out of the way.

Craft Demonstrations

This artisan is tying off the fringe of a pillow.  She also has a table runner that's just begun on the loom.

This loom is set up with a rug that is being woven with strips of denim.

Traditional Shaker hats

Shaker baskets

Candle holder, notice the holes at the top... they allow the candle to be moved to the best height for the work that is being done; reading, crocheting, mending, etc.

Shaker vessels

Dining room

Punched-tin lantern

Broom-maker artisan

Broom vice that flattens round broom giving it shoulders and a traditional shape.

This broomcorn is sorgum.

Making a water bucket.

Treadle wood lathe

Looking out the upstairs window onto the Meeting House.

These traditional Shaker cabinets are built into the 3rd floor wall.

Trustees' Office

Beautiful circular staircase

We had a very nice lunch in the Trustees' Office made with locally grown foods.  One of the house specialities is double-crusted lemon pie made with the entire lemon (including rind).  Interesting...

Farm Barn
Many of the barns in Kentucky are painted black - kind of like ours are traditionally red.

Scottish Highlander
