Home of President James Monroe

James Monroe purchased Highland because of his friendship with Thomas Jefferson in 1793.  Seeking to create a "society to our taste" or a society of learned gentlemen.  Jefferson selected the site and sent his gardeners from Monticello to start orchards.  November of 1779, James and Elizabeth moved into their "cabin castle."  James and Dolley Madison were their first guests.

Statue of James Monroe in the gardens.

We saw a little rabbit in the garden.  Today Ash Lawn-Highland is a working , self-supporting plantation owned by Monroe's alma mater, the College of William and Mary.  After spending most of the day at Monticello we didn't do this home justice but what I found interesting was that most of the furnishing were original to the Monroe family.

Iron casting of a highway marker on Highway 40, the first federally supported interstate roadway - created during James Monroe's presidency.
