New York, New York

Scott and I traveled by train from Trenton, New Jersey to New York City.  We arrived at Madison Square Garden, rode a few blocks in a yellow taxi, and then took a double-decker bus tour.  We rode on the top deck even though the temperature was 45 degrees!  Brrrrrr...

The red bus and the yellow cab are like the ones we took all around the city.

Old buildings and new buildings side by side.  Our tour guide told us that they keep replacing existing buildings with even high skyscrapers.  In some areas of Manhattan the older historic buildings are protected from being torn down.

New York Public Library

Isn't this lion awesome?  Patience and Fortitude are the two lions guarding the entrance to the New York Public Library.

Empire State Building
The bottom of the Empire State Building and...
the top!

The Empire State Building is 103 stories tall and was the tallest building in the world when it was built in 1931 until the World Trade Center's North Tower was built in 1970.  Following the 9-11 attacks it was again the tallest building in New York although it is no longer the tallest in the city.  One World Trade Center reached a greater height on April 30, 2012.

Flatiron Building
The Flatiron Buidling was constructed between 1901 and 1903.  It's unusual design was created by Chicago's Daniel Burnham and many people of the time thought it wouldn't withstand the winds of Long Island but it has stood the test of time!

Many of the buildings in Manhattan get there water supply from rooftop water towers, some are disguised with a cover but in this photo you can see three of them.

Rockefeller Center
The Rockefeller Center's Christmas tree arrived the day we were in Manhattan.  It's a 76 foot Norway
Spruce that traveled by flatbed truck from Connecticut.

Tower 1
One World Trade Center is the primary building in the new World Trade Center complex and is the tallest building in the United States at 1,776 feet tall and 104 stories!

Statue of Liberty
This was as close as I got to the iconic Lady Liberty.

The Waldorf Astoria
Yes, we went inside and had lunch at the Waldorf and yes, it was very opulent!  A once in a lifetime experience - we even shared a Waldorf Salad, had to do it, Mom made a better one.  Scott too!

The apples were julienned with halved grapes and candied walnuts, all of which was nice, but we didn't like the dressing (not sure what was in it)!  I had a sandwich and they cut the crusts off my bread, now that's high class!

Times Square

Woody was in Times Square - he's my favorite, you know!

The police watch the traffic from above the street!

And look at this traffic!

Scott with Cookie Monster and Elmo!

This is the building where the ball drops on New Years Eve.

The moon shines down on Times Square.

Cambria, I took this picture for you!  Miss National Sweetheart won a scholarship along with her title! We met her while waiting in line at the theater.

Nederlander Theatre
We got Broadway tickets to see Newsies - the theater was beautiful, the dancing fantastic, and the sets were amazing.  Newsies is based on a real-life newsboy strike of 1899 in New York City.
