Weeki Wachee

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park
Weeki Wachee was like stepping back in time, a mid-century tourist trap!  The mermaid show began in 1947 in a natural limestone spring basin.  Each day, 117 million gallons of clear fresh water bubbles from the spring forming the Weeki Wachee River.  The mermaids breathe with a free flowing air hose hooked to an air compressor as they swim gracefully through the water.  While we were there, they performed Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid. It was just as much fun to watch the children in the audience as the mermaids.  They were enchanted.  Many of the mermaids remember coming to Weeki Wachee as children and one was even a second generation mermaid.

Can you see the rocks forming a natural limestone pool behind the mermaids?

In the finale, the Little Mermaid dances with her Prince Charming.

You can see the Weeki Wachee mermaids in Kelly Clarkson's video, "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)".
