Death Valley Day 1: Badwater Basin, Devil's Golf Course, & Artists Drive

BADWATER BASIN

BADWATER POOL
Ancient water fills this pool year-round from an underground aquifer that emerges at Badwater along a fault line at the mountain base.

Salt crystals

Look closely; high on this rock face is a sign that says "sea level".

Scott walking on the Badwater Basin path.

Badwater Basin is the lowest point in North America with a surreal landscape of vast salt flats.

The Death Valley saltpan is one of the largest in North America.  Salt continues to be deposited by reoccurring flooding.

Elevation on Scott's phone!

More salt crystals

I don't think I'll visit during the summer - too hot!  What's the average temperature during your birth month?  What's the record?

LUNCH AT THE DEVIL'S GOLF COURSE

A beautiful sky...

Devil's Golf Course

An immense area of rock salt eroded by wind and rain into jagged spires so incredibly serrated that "only the devil could play golf on such rough links."

Scott looking for his lost golf ball!

I think it is so interesting how the salt almost looks like geometric shapes on the ground.

ARTISTS DRIVE

Amargosa Range

Dip in the road...

Wash at dip

Jigsaw Mountain

ARTISTS PALETTE
Palette of color; repeated volcanic eruptions covered the area with ash and minerals.  The minerals were altered by heat and water to create the colors.

Creosote Bush

Chemical analyses have identified a paint pot of elements including iron, aluminum, magnesium, and titanium but no copper.

🚙🚗🚕  We saw several out-of-state license plates and decided we'd play the Death Valley License Plate Game!  We've got 5 days.  How many plates do you think we'll find?  Want to play along?  Get a U.S. Map and color each state we find over the next 5 days.  How many do you think we'll see out of 50 states?  Make a guess.

Day 1 we saw:  California, Nevada, Washington, Idaho, Michigan, Ohio, Maryland, Kansas, New Mexico, Utah, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Florida, Arizona, and Colorado.  That's 16.
